about us

Ms. Lambe

Gaston College Preparatory

“My students are smart, hard working, and exceptionally dedicated to getting themselves to and through college.

At KIPP Gaston College Preparatory / KIPP Pride High School in rural northeastern North Carolina, my student body is 85% African-American with 65% being eligible for free/reduced lunch. In 2002-03 KIPP Gaston was named the sixth highest performing school in the entire state of NC out of 2,219 schools. By 2005 97% of our students were performing at or above grade level according to NC state tests and from 2009-11 100% of KIPP Gaston seniors were accepted to college-85% of these students will be first generation college graduates. KIPP GCP was named "One of America’s Best High Schools in America” by Newsweek magazine in 2010 and The Washington Post in 2011. At KIPP we are guided by the philosophy that "we learn not for school, but for life."

Our needs are simple: we need reference books, like dictionaries and thesauruses, to help us build the vocabulary we need to succeed in Advanced Placement courses and in college. As we write in class, my students need these texts to find alternative, more nuanced, precise, and more sophisticated ways of expressing themselves. For an English classroom, these items aren't luxuries -- they are necessities.
Reference books like dictionaries and thesauruses are the basic materials needed in an English classroom. My students will use them daily-- and your contribution to the lives of these remarkable young people will make a difference every single day! ”
