Ms. Brichta

P.S. 145 Bloomingdale School

“ I'm a Bilingual Special Education teacher at a high-needs urban school. My students all qualify for free breakfast and lunch, and most are children of recent immigrants with limited education and literacy in their native language of Spanish.
This year I'll be teaching Grade 5, a crucial year as students prepare to transition to Middle School. My students have moderate to severe language and learning disabilities. Many special education teachers focus on literacy and math, areas in which their students struggle, and in which they'll be tested. However, the students often are far more passionate about the arts, sciences, and social studies, and I try to leverage those interests to build their literacy and math skills. Our school has wonderful partnerships with the New York Historical Society and the Metropolitan Opera that will provide a great deal of support in the arts and social studies. In order to make the curriculum work for my students with special needs, they will need access to technology, and to materials for the arts and hands-on science activities. ”
