Here is what we need

Your contribution will help First Grade Foundations get essential resources for students, including those below:

Children's Books

Another thing I keep trying to purchase for my room, but it is just so expensive, is good quality books that integrate different cultures, while teaching my standards and our themes. It is very difficult to find any cultural books in our media center, and often in our county libraries that aren't just about other countries. I want to be able to share a "picture" of what all people look like through literature; to learn about how similar we are to people everywhere; and to study non-fiction pieces so they can compare F/NF and dig deeper into the texts. I search thirft stores after thrift stores on weekends to get books, but it is just by luck if I can find them. My students would love to see themselves and others reflected in the books we study.

Science Books

Students are so curious about the world around them. I'm really trying to bring science even more to girls so they can see the potential in careers in science. I've recently added a "Read About Science" center to my literacy stations, but I lack 1st-2nd grade level science texts to use that they can easily decode and understand. Science topics get students to WANT to read, and that is half the battle.

Career Technical Education & STEM

I am currently writing STEM units and lesson plans for my state to use, but I find that the materials to implement lesson are very hard to find easily. I cannot even begin to express the level of excitement and LIGHT in my students' eyes when we tried to design "mazes" out of recycled materials so they could practice forces and motion in getting their magnetic ball out of their mazes. I only wish I could purchase some other more complex STEM kits to allow the students to continue their excitment about STEM. Your help could make it happen!

Teacher Resources

My students need whiteboards that they can write on daily and reuse to show their thinking and markers.

Notebook Computers

A requirement for all students currently in school is they engage in technology. It's also a requirement that we, as teachers, get "graded" on the integration of. The problem is, how do you show students engaged in "higher level thinking" when the donated comptuers from at least 15 years ago, that scream beeps at you, or take 12 minutes to even load up the home page can do this? My students go online for reading programs, to create powerpoints, listen to audio and watch videos that support their learning. Notebooks/netbooks are a way to get WORKING computers that have internet access into their hands at an affordable price. These would be used DAILY by ALL my students and I cannot begin to tell you the difference technology can make on their lives. Our media center has so many books that are 20+ years old, we often don't have copies of things we study now in our current Core curriculum, and I can't even find what I need to teach from and end up spending a fortune on texts. Netbooks allow us to see books online, etc.
