I will teach 2nd grade at Gloverville Elementary, a TITLE I School in Gloverville, SC, a mill town where the only employment was in a textile mill which is now defunct. Gloverville Elementary is a 76% free and reduced lunch poverty TITLE I school and is in the top 10 poverty schools in Aiken County School District. Most of my students are on free or reduced lunch indicating a high proportion of students from a manipulatives deficient and book-free environment. I have over 30 years of teaching experience with a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education plus 12 additional graduate hours of Reading Recovery training from Clemson University.The past four school years my position at Gloverville Elementary was the certified Reading Recovery (RR) teacher who taught the lowest scoring 20% of struggling first graders in the morning , (the 4 lowest students in the first semester and the next 4 lowest scoring students the second semester) and held responsible with ongoing data to bring the Reading Intervention groups of 4-5 children receiving appropriate reading level with 30 minutes of instruction from me only each afternoon and one group of struggling 2nd grade readers to the reading level of their peers. Our public school district is 2 million dollars short in this year's school budget and I was one of several trained RR teachers not rehired FY 2013-14, but will teach 2nd grade. The intensive RR training taught me how to teach reading. Last year I spent $3,000 out-of-pocket on multi-level Reading Intervention books (Pioneer Valley Books) and recently I ordered (Lakeshore School Supply) a cart with 6 to 8 blue plastic tubs to display personal books. My classroom has 1 small inadequate book shelving unit and I am in dire need of more book shelving, many more plastic tubs to place books of different genres and for organization of all the books purchased by me ($450 of wonderful books at a recent July yard sale of a retiring teacher who had suffered a stroke), cozy seating ("Fat Boys" seating from Target") and large throw pillows for 4-5 children to read, a soft rug needed for an inviting Reading Area in order for organization of hundreds of books to teach 2nd grade Common Core Reading Standards. There is a gross lack of mathematics manipulatives to teach the concepts of 2nd grade Math Core Standards. Without a variety of manipulatives for students to use, I must rely on abstract symbolization to teach mathematics concepts. Many 2nd graders will arrive on August 19, 2013, without a grasp of 1st grade reading and/or 1st grade math concepts. I believe God created teachers, in His wisdom and His grace, to help children understand and truly comprehend the beauty and the wonder of every thing we see, and to learn to make our world a better, wiser place. ClassWish Eligibility Requirements

ClassWish invites leaders of FIRST Robotics teams and also invites teachers, student teachers, substitute teachers, part-time after school teachers, staff developers, librarians, guidance counselors, school nurses, coaches, principals, administrators, other school employees directly serving students in an educational capacity, and officers acting on behalf of school Parent Teacher Association units recognized by the National Parent Teacher Association and on behalf of other parent teacher organizations (collectively, “Educators”) in K-12, public, magnet and charter schools, and private and parochial that are exempt from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, and that are in the 50 states or the District of Columbia (collectively, “Allowed Schools”) to create wish lists (“Wish Lists”) indicating the supplies and equipment they need for their students to excel and to submit requests (“Requests”) for ClassWish to provide particular items funded by contributions to such Wish Lists.

Funded Requests cannot be transferred to another Educator.

In order to register on ClassWish.org and create Wish Lists and Requests, you must attest to the following:

  • I confirm that I am a leader of a FIRST Robotics team or am an Educator in an Allowed School, as those terms are defined above;
  • The activities for which I intend to use any items received through ClassWish are legal and fall within the standards of my state and/or local board or department of education, and the policies of my school or, in the case of FIRST Robotics team leaders, fall within the standards of FIRST Robotics;
  • All information I provide to ClassWish is accurate, and I will promptly update the information to keep it accurate;
  • Any Requests I submit and any funding or items I receive are solely for use in my classroom and/or school, or in the case of FIRST Robotics team leaders are solely for use by my FIRST team, and any items I request through ClassWish will not be for my or anyone else’s personal use;
  • I agree that any items provided to me by ClassWish shall become and remain the property of (i) the school to which ClassWish has them delivered, and I will not take such items to another school, or (ii) in the case of a FIRST Robotics team such items provided to me by ClassWish or purchased with funds provided to me by ClassWish shall become and remain the property of the FIRST Robotics team or, if such is dissolved, shall become the property of FIRST Robotics.
  • I commit to including in my Wish Lists and Requests only items that will benefit my students’ education, including extracurricular activities, and to use any items that I receive from ClassWish only for such purposes.
  • I agree that in the event that ClassWish determines that any items I received through ClassWish are not being used in accordance with these Eligibility Requirements, I will return such items to ClassWish at my expense. In the case of FIRST teams, ClassWish may rely on the determination of FIRST Robotics in this regard.
