Mrs. Guthery

Milwaukee School Of Languages

“My name is Kelly. I teach students with Autism from ages 12-21 in Milwaukee, WI. I absolutely LOVE my job! I teach students with cool skills and some pretty neat fascinations (things that really excite and engage them). I try to use their fascinations to motivate them and increase learning and communication opportunities. My day is made when I see my students light up, evidence of true learning.

I would like to try to challenge my students in new ways this year. In order to do so, I am asking for some specific supplies.

The first thing I need is printer ink. I have an HP printer in my room and am in desperate need of black ink: CC530A. My supply of color ink is good for now. I print a lot of picture communication symbols for my students who are non-verbal so printer ink is a critical need. I would appreciate any help in with that.

We are going to work hard on measurement in my class this year. I could use 24 - 12 inch rulers, 4 liquid measuring cups, and 4 sets of dry measuring cups.

I discovered last year, that several of my students were very responsive to instruction that included music. I would like to tackle some reading materials this year and pair them with the musical soundtrack (Audio). I am hopeful that this will increase engagement of my students who are the most difficult to reach. I would like both the paperback novel and the audio soundtrack for James and the Giant Peach. I would also like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs Junior Novelization (book) and the motion picture soundtrack from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

There is a reason puzzle pieces represent Autism. My students are a puzzle and it is my job to put the pieces in place. I am constantly looking for new ways to engage my students in learning!

Finally, students with Autism often need "fidget items" to keep their hands busy so they can focus on learning. One of my students is fascinated with bracelets...anything from the rubber band bracelets (i.e. Livestrong bands) to girlie bangle bracelets. Other fidget "toys" that students use include stress balls, mini squish balls, and Koosh balls. Any of those items would be appreciated.

Thank you so much for thinking about us!”
